The area is known for the First Battle of Springfield that was part of the American Civil War in 1861. It was the only Union victory in Missouri that year.

It was originally built in 1913 and constructed with limestone quarried from the Ozarks. The organization, The Knights of Pythias, built the castle as a home for widows and children of members of the group. The property is now privately owned. It was renovated and is now open for public use as a rental for weddings and parties.

Another popular landmark in Springfield, MO is the Gillioz Theatre. It first open in 1926 and used to show silent movies and live performances. Its first sound system was installed in 1928. Its last show was an opera in 1980. The building is now used for concerts and other live shows.
